Indian SMEs – and even some of the largest Indian business conglomerates – typically begin their journey as family-run, family-managed, and family–nurtured operations. With SMEs today standing at the cusp of a high-growth era, it is all the more critical that family-run businesses evolve new business strategies and bring in systems and processes that enable them to work alongside and compete with the professionally-run business. This in no way implies that family-run businesses lack professionalism.

MentorSquare aims to bring to the forefront some of the key differences between the family-run and the professionally-run business - how they offer different advantages and disadvantages to customers, partners, and other ecosystem members, and how, with the right mentoring, businesses can function on par with their peers regardless of whether management is hired or inherited.

Raju Swamy:

As an independent management consultant, Mr. Swamy works with family businesses, entrepreneurs, CEOs of SMEs and larger enterprises in the private sector, and assists in evolving growth and functional improvement strategies. With specialization spanning marketing, HR, strategy & planning, and general management, a key focus area for Mr. Swamy is in identifying and solving family-business issues. An MBA from IIM Kolkata and MA in Economics, industry sectors that he has closely associated with include Manufacturing and Engineering, IT & ITeS, and FMCG.

Cherian Kuruvilla:

Mr. Kuruvilla comes to MentorSquare with over 3 decades of work experience across Indian and international corporations. With specialization in operations, marketing and HR management, as well as Strategy & Planning with special focus on the start-up community, Mr. Kuruvilla has built an impressive track record of success in project management, retail operations, rural marketing, and other diverse fields. An Electrical Engineer from NIT, Kozhikode, Mr. Kuruvilla has experience spanning the retail, consumer durables, telecom, FMCG, and capital equipment verticals.
