Managers, and entrepreneurs, use the word strategy often and loosely. There is considerable confusion about what it means. Is strategy a plan, or work in progress? Is it a sequence of activities or a loose pattern of action? Is it the business plan? Cost reduction, quality improvement, or better customer service – are they strategy? Misconceived notions are not all, a number of myths crowd the managerial mind. First mover advantage, one stop shop, scale as strategy, are a few common fairy tales. They are so deeply rooted that we think nothing of staking all our resources in their pursuit. This is especially dangerous for start-ups and small companies. Their limited resources make them particularly vulnerable to missteps. Small entrepreneurs can lose everything to a misjudgement arising out of incorrect appreciation of strategy.
